Field Underwriting Sales Manager
Represents Motorists Insurance and functions as the primary relationship manager for assigned agents with a primary focus on commercial lines. Responsible for achieving established growth and profitability objectives.
Sales and Agency Management
Develop an agency force that pre-qualifies accounts and recognizes the value of the DSM position to help them build a commercial book of business and achieve established growth and profitability goals. Supports the development of other business units (personal lines, life, brokerage, etc.)
Monitors agent results (production, pricing, loss ratio, hit ratio, etc.) for the purpose of managing performance and developing corrective actions where necessary in accordance with company underwriting standards and procedures.
Participate in the agency review process; lead the discussion for assigned territory and provide feedback to local and Home Office leadership. Makes recommendations related to agency cancellations/termination actions where appropriate.
On service sensitive accounts meets with agent and insured to help finalize sale and assure service plan is met.
Through effective influence management affect activities of the inside underwriting and support teams to facilitate the successfully delivery and execution of agency business plan goals.
Promote agents ease of doing business with Motorists.
Develop, negotiate and execute business plans for selected agencies in accordance with company underwriting and sales objectives.
Identiies and coordinates the review and evaluation of rollover books of business for acceptability.
Develop, underwrite, price and propose all commercial new business in assigned territory with a focus on underwriting the more complex or service sensitive mid-market accounts.
Make consistent underwriting decisions; adhering to company underwriting and pricing standards.
Monitors risk selection, renewal retention and pricing decisions of the agents within assigned territory, both on a book of business basis an at the individual account level.
Performs inspections where appropriate and as determined by Loss Control Guide. Makes risk improvement recommendations and promptly follows up on same, documenting underwriting file accordingly.
Provide technical assistance to the agents for new business risks, including coverage enhancements, policy provisions, classifications, endorsements and rates.
Training and Liaison
Provide new agent training with the assistance of the Commercial and Personal Lines Divisions and Training and Development department to allow the agency to become sufficiently productive.
Assists agents with sales strategies to develop new business, improve retention and regain/maintain profitability.
Conducts sales/training sessions and orientation of new products/programs/systems for assigned agents.
Monitors local marketplace, develops competitive intelligence, and makes recommendations regarding new and/or existing products/programs.
Communicates and collaborates with inside underwriting team to share industry trends and feedback from agents as well as field underwriting experience.
Assist in the audit, loss control and risk retention process.
Responsible for automobile travel within territory travelling to agents offices. Car travel represents approximately 50% of employee’s time.
Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Typically 2-5 years of progressively responsible commercial lines underwriting experience; strongly preference for middle market underwriting proficiency.
Strong working knowledge of commercial multi-line underwriting, pricing and coverage for small and mid-market account business.
